Abstract
Religion, culture, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are all critical components of the future of cognitive science and the development of advanced technologies. In particular, this paper highlights the role that these factors play in shaping advanced technologies that can promote emotional regulation and well- being. The integration of religious and cultural practices with innovative AI and machine learning technology can lead to the development of more culturally and religiously appropriate emotion regulation interventions. At the same time, the advancement of AI technology can help facilitate the storage, organization, and analysis of large datasets related to culture and religion, allowing for more nuanced and evidence-based interventions. The intersection of religion, culture, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been gaining attention in recent years due to their potential impact on emotion regulation. This paper explores the ways in which religiosity and cultural beliefs influence emotion regulation, and how AI technology can augment or supplement those practices. Moreover, the development of advanced technologies that can intervene in emotion regulation can lead to the creation of new interdisciplinary research directions that bridge the fields of cognitive science, psychology, sociology, and computer science. Such interdisciplinary research can leverage the potential of advanced AI technologies to develop novel emotion regulation interventions that can integrate cultural and religious factors. Research has shown that religious individuals tend to use prayer and meditation as coping mechanisms for distressing emotions (Ano & Vasconcelles, 2005). These practices are believed to activate brain regions involved in emotion regulation, such as the prefrontal cortex (Newberg, d'Aquili, & Rause, 2001). Moreover, cultural background also shapes emotional experiences, attitudes and expressions (Matsumoto, Yoo, & Nakagawa, 2008). For example, middle Eastern culture values the display of strong emotional expressions for personal communication, whereas in East Asian culture it is perceived as inappropriate and unwelcome (Matsumoto & Juang, 2016). In contrast to traditional methods, contemporary AI-powered emotion regulation technologies aim to train emotional intelligence by detecting user's emotions and suggesting strategies to regulate them (Mehrabian & Russell, 1974). Virtual reality and simulation therapy are being developed for patients with anxiety and phobias, and pilot studies have shown improved emotional regulation abilities (Difede et al., 2007). In addition, chatbots and conversational AI have been deployed to provide mental health support and reduce stress levels during the COVID-19 pandemic (Wang et al. 2021). However, limitations of such systems include lack of cultural sensitivity, accountability and privacy that are important elements for religiosity and cultural norms (Metzinger, 2019). Overall, this paper argues that there is a unique relationship between religion, culture, and AI in emotional regulation. The promising feature is how they intersect and can be leveraged for novel interventions that positively influence the well-being and the evolution of intricate technologies in cognitive science.
