Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a non-progressive neurological disorder caused due to lesion formation in the brain during the prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal developmental periods. Typically, CP affects motor movement but can impair cognitive functions in about fifty percent of cases. The brain is a malleable organ that can reinstate its connections, so cognitive training can enhance cognitive functions. Studies have shown that an environment rich in negative air ions (NAIs) is beneficial for increasing productivity, psychological health, and well-being. This study investigated the effects of NAIs on the cognitive functions of CP-inflicted patients. The significant improvement in cognitive functioning may be due to enhanced activity of the brain regions likely the cerebral cortex, prefrontal cortex, and parietal lobe as well as the neurotransmitter serotonin in the intervened group. More detailed clinical studies are still required to have a strong evidential basis for the cognitive rehabilitation of CP-inflicted patients using NAIs.
