It is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects the motor system, characterized by the gradual loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain, particularly in an area called the substantia nigra. Dopamine is a crucial neurotransmitter for coordinating movement.

The exact cause of Parkinson's disease is not fully understood but is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Age is the most significant risk factor, with the majority of cases occurring in individuals over the age of 60. However, early-onset Parkinson's can also occur in younger individuals.

Diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is based on a clinical assessment of symptoms and medical history. There are currently no specific laboratory tests or imaging studies that can definitively confirm the disease. Treatment options aim to alleviate symptoms, improve quality of life, and slow down disease progression, which may include medication therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and in some cases, surgical interventions such as deep brain stimulation.


Indications and Usage:

Nourianz (istradefylline) tablets are indicated as an adjunctive treatment to levodopa/carbidopa in adult patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experiencing "off" episodes. "Off" episodes refer to periods when the effectiveness of levodopa/carbidopa medications diminishes, leading to an exacerbation of PD symptoms such as tremor and difficulty walking. Nourianz is intended to improve motor function and reduce the frequency and severity of "off" episodes in PD patients.
