Abstract
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder affecting movement, muscle tone, and coordination. It is caused by brain damage before or during birth. While neurosurgery is not the primary treatment, certain surgical interventions may be considered in specific cases to manage symptoms or address associated issues. The decision to pursue neurosurgery in CP is made on a case-by-case basis, and not all individuals will require or benefit from surgery.
Some neurosurgical interventions include Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), orthopedic
surgeries, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), and intrathecal Baclofen Pump. SDR involves
cutting sensory nerve fibers from muscles to enter the spinal cord, while DBS involves
implanting electrodes in specific brain areas to modulate abnormal neural activity and
improve motor function. Baclofen is a muscle relaxant that can be delivered directly into the
spinal fluid, helping reduce spasticity in CP patients.
To determine the most appropriate treatment plan for CP, individuals and their families should work closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and physical therapists. The decision to undergo
neurosurgery should be based on a thorough evaluation of the individual's condition, overall health, and treatment goals.
