Abstract: This abstract provides a comprehensive overview of the role of physiotherapy in the management of dementia. The assessment phase involves a subjective examination encompassing the duration, onset, severity, and nature of symptoms, as well as an evaluation of the patient's family and social history, medication, and medical history including comorbidities. Objective examination methods include neuromuscular assessment, sensory evaluation, gait and balance analysis, laboratory testing, neuroimaging assessments such as MRI or CT scan, functional assessment utilizing appropriate outcome measures, and cognitive/mental assessment.
Regarding treatment, a range of strategies are employed. Education is provided to both patients and their caregivers to enhance understanding and self-management. Environmental modifications are recommended to optimize the patient's surroundings and promote safety. Mobility interventions, such as the use of appropriate assistive devices like wheelchairs, Zimmer's frames, or walking sticks, are utilized. Additionally, strength, coordination, and balance training are implemented to improve physical function. Fall prevention strategies, including appropriate footwear, are emphasized.
The abstract also highlights gait retraining with the aid of biofeedback as a beneficial approach. Furthermore, it explores the use of electrical stimulation and pelvic floor strengthening exercises for the prevention or management of urinary incontinence in dementia patients.
Overall, this abstract emphasizes the crucial role of physiotherapy in the comprehensive management of dementia. By employing various assessment techniques and treatment strategies, physiotherapy aims to enhance the well-being and functional abilities of individuals living with dementia.
