Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the prevalent and rapidly increasing form of dementia among the elderly, encompassing over 60% of dementia-related cases. AD is an irreversible and progressive condition, gradually eroding memory, cognitive abilities, and impeding routine activities. Despite treatments available for symptom management, a definitive cure remains elusive.
Statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association indicate that currently, more than five million individuals live with this disorder. This number is projected to soar to nearly eight million by 2030. The disease initiates deep within the brain, affecting neuron efficiency and eventual degeneration. Progression through stages involves distinct biological changes, including reduced glucose metabolism, accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques, and brain atrophy. In AD, specific brain regions, particularly areas in the temporal and parietal lobes, exhibit diminished glucose metabolism. Emerging techniques like PET scans offer insights into identifying Alzheimer’s pathology even in its preclinical stages.
Understanding these distinct biological markers is crucial in the early identification and potential intervention for Alzheimer's disease.
