Abstract
Description: The presentation covers the main symptoms, possible causes, neurochemical basis and treatment approaches of the psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia. Firstly, delusions, hallucinations and thought disorders, which are the main symptoms of schizophrenia, are described; standard diagnostic criteria such as ICD-10 and possible causes are discussed. Then, neurochemical bases such as dopamine hypothesis and glutamate dysfunction are explained. Using structural and functional brain MRI scans of schizophrenia patients, common features are revealed. From a cognitive perspective, common cognitive deficits and social cognitive impairments - problems in areas such as attention, memory, social skills - are discussed. In addition, cognitive models and theories are presented. Finally, pharmacological and psychosocial treatment approaches are discussed. Treatment options such as antipsychotic drugs, cognitive behavioural therapy, family therapy are examined in order to create an effective treatment approach. This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of schizophrenia, providing an overview from symptoms to treatment.
